What is a Hole Saw?
A hole saw is a circular blade with teeth on its outer edge and is mounted on an arbor (a rod that fits into a drill chuck). Hole saws rotate when the drill is turned on, cutting precisely through the material. Unlike standard drill bits, these powerful cutting tools can create larger holes without removing the core material! This makes hole saws efficient and powerful and an ideal choice for projects where cutting larger holes is needed.
Types of Hole Saws
You can get various types of hole saws such as bi-metal hole saws, diamond holesaws and tungsten carbide hole saws. The bi-metal ones are made from a combination of steel and high-speed steel and are the most cost-effective option. This type of hole saw is perfect for use on metals, stainless steels and softer materials such as plastic and wood. However, they aren’t as durable and don’t last as long compared to the tungsten carbide alternative.
Tungsten carbide hole saws are made from a high grade steel core with tungsten carbide tipped teeth, which makes these highly durable and long-lasting. This type of hole saw is suitable for use on masonry, concrete, brick etc.
What applications can I do with Hole Saws?
With various types of hole saws available, there are plenty of different applications that they can be used for. This means the possibilities for your projects are endless and a hole saw set can work across numerous industries.
Some of the applications you can do with a hole saw are:
- Fitting taps and other hardware to sinks, baths and worktops
- Boring through masonry for ventilation systems or waste removal
- Fitting conduit runs or drainage pipes
- Drilling holes for wiring and cable routing
- General joinery, woodwork and DIY projects
- Cutouts for hardware for doors and ceilings for lights.
What are Core Drills?
Core drills are a special type of drill that is used to bore clean and precise holes in heavy-duty materials. It is commonly used in construction and other industries to create holes in pipes, utilities and conduits. Core drills are also perfect for collecting material samples for testing and analysis purposes. Diamond core drill bits are the most popular as they are robust and long-lasting due to the strong diamond powder embedded into their surface. However, core drill bits can also be made from carbide.
Diamond core drill bits are ideal for tougher materials, giving you a clean cut in any robust material. For carbide core drill bits, it is best to use them on softer materials as when used on hard metals and other strong materials, the precision is less clean.
What applications can I do with core drill bits?
Core drilling is used for many applications but is particularly used in a variety of construction and industrial industries. Core drilling is used regularly for pipe installation and other utilities where the technique used is to create large, precise holes to fit them in correctly. It can also often be used to create holes for door and window openings as well as ventilation system installation.
Core drill bits can be used during the construction process for new buildings or renovating older, existing buildings. Construction workers can create holes for the placement of structural supports, like beams, or can even drill for the placement of a staircase.
